Everything we cover under switchboard upgrades

Why old boards bite

What an old switchboard is actually risking

Fuse-wire boards and missing safety switches aren't quaint heritage features - they're the leading cause of electrical fires we get called to. Three things a proper upgrade actually fixes.

RCDs on every circuit

Not just the power points. Lights, oven, hot water, air-con - every circuit gets a safety switch. That's the current standard, not a luxury upgrade.

Whole-home surge protection

One close lightning strike can fry every device in the house - TVs, computers, fridge, heat pump. A surge protector at the main costs less than replacing one of those.

Spare capacity for what you’ll add

EV charger, heat pump, solar, the second oven you'll buy in three years. We leave 30% spare capacity and labelled spare ways so the next install isn't another board upgrade.

Ceramic-fuse to RCBO, heritage home

A 1962 ceramic-fuse board replaced with a modern RCBO board. RCDs on every circuit, whole-home surge protection at the main.

Submain & board upgrade, Legana

Old 60-amp submain dug up and replaced alongside a board upgrade - sized to handle a new 6.6kW solar plus a future EV charger.

Insurance-flagged upgrade

Insurer flagged an ageing switchboard as a fire risk and threatened to drop cover. Upgraded to current standard - premium dropped immediately.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Anything we haven't covered? Call 0438 961 005 and we'll talk it through.

How long is the power off?+
Usually 4–6 hours for a residential upgrade. We can stage it if you need partial power.
Why upgrade if my board still works?+
Old boards lack safety switches on every circuit. Modern boards isolate faults faster.
Will my insurer require an upgrade?+
Some do - ceramic-fuse boards are increasingly flagged in policies.
Can you relocate the meter box?+
Yes - coordinated with TasNetworks for the meter reconnection.
